Filter Your Runoff!

Point Isabel and the Albany Marsh are two wonderful wetlands in the northern East Bay. They're some of the last remnants of the vast, biologically busy tidal marshes which once ringed the region and are home to all manner of salty little birds and beasts. And they were saved by volunteers just like us - average people who didn't wait for permission before stepping up to do good. Without their heartfelt vision and courage, the East Bay's shorelines would still be a toxic dump.

Unfortunately, these miraculous marshes are now covered in tons of trash washed up out of the Bay. We suspect most of the garbage is local litter swept out to sea by stormwater runoff, likely from adjoining City of Richmond and CalTrans land. Both of these entities are subject to cease and desist orders issued by the state water board for failing to competently capture their crap. In addition to cleanups, we are pressuring these entities and others to filter this trash out of their stormwater before it reaches the Bay!

If you'd like to help protect our shared wetlands from the swamp monster of human trash, reach out to our elected reps and agencies listed below. Keep your message short and friendly, tell a story, and don't forget that these folks work for us!

- The East Bay Regional Park District;

- The City of Richmond, including its sewer maintenance department;

- CalTrans; and

- Buffy Wicks (State Assembly District 14), Jesse Arreguin (State Senate District 7), and Gavin Newsom, Governor.
